Diesel Prices in India Today – City-Wise Rates and State-Wise Comparison

Diesel is one of the most widely used fuels in India, powering commercial vehicles, agricultural machinery, public transport, and a large number of private cars. Because of its importance in daily life and business operations, diesel prices directly affect household budgets as well as the overall economy. Keeping track of diesel prices helps consumers plan fuel expenses and allows transport and logistics sectors to manage costs more efficiently.

In India, diesel prices are revised on a daily basis under the dynamic fuel pricing system. Oil marketing companies update the rates every morning, usually around 6 AM, based on international crude oil prices and currency exchange rates. However, the final price that consumers pay at fuel stations varies from city to city and state to state due to differences in local taxes and transportation charges.

Current Diesel Prices in Major Cities

Diesel prices in metro cities show noticeable variation. For example, cities like Hyderabad and Chennai generally record higher diesel prices compared to New Delhi or Mumbai. In recent updates, Hyderabad’s diesel price is around ₹95.7 per litre, while Chennai is close to ₹92.6 per litre. Kolkata stands at approximately ₹92.0 per litre, and Mumbai is around ₹90.0 per litre. Bangalore’s diesel price is near ₹90.99 per litre, while New Delhi remains one of the more affordable metro cities with a price of about ₹87.67 per litre.

These differences are mainly due to state-level taxes and local levies. Even within the same state, prices can differ slightly depending on municipal charges and distance from fuel depots. As a result, motorists traveling between cities often notice changes in fuel rates across regions.

State-Wise Diesel Price Range

When looking at diesel prices across states and union territories, the variation becomes even more evident. Some regions have relatively lower diesel prices due to reduced taxation and transportation costs. For instance, areas such as Andaman and Nicobar Islands often record some of the cheapest diesel rates, around ₹78 per litre. On the other hand, states like Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are among those with higher diesel prices, touching nearly ₹97 per litre.

This wide range highlights how taxation policies play a crucial role in fuel pricing. States that impose higher value-added tax (VAT) or additional cesses on fuel naturally see higher pump prices. Conversely, states with lower VAT structures are able to offer comparatively cheaper diesel.

How Diesel Prices Are Calculated in India

The retail price of diesel in India is determined by several components. The base price is linked to international crude oil rates, as India imports a large portion of its crude oil requirement. When global crude prices rise, domestic fuel prices usually follow the upward trend, and vice versa.

On top of the base price, central government taxes are added in the form of excise duty. This component remains largely uniform across the country. The next major factor is state taxes, commonly known as VAT or sales tax, which differ from one state to another and significantly influence the final price.

Additionally, distribution and freight costs are included in the price. These charges account for transportation of fuel from refineries to depots and then to retail outlets. Cities located farther from refineries or major fuel depots may have slightly higher prices due to increased logistics costs.

Why Monitoring Diesel Prices Matters

Diesel prices have a direct impact on the cost of transportation, which in turn affects the prices of essential goods such as food and daily necessities. For individuals, rising diesel prices mean higher commuting expenses, especially for those who use diesel vehicles regularly. For businesses, especially in logistics and agriculture, fuel costs form a major part of operating expenses.

Because diesel prices are updated daily, even small changes can accumulate into noticeable monthly differences. By staying informed about current rates, consumers can better plan long-distance travel, refueling schedules, and overall budgets.

Conclusion

Diesel prices in India vary widely depending on city, state, and local taxation policies. With daily revisions, these rates closely reflect global crude oil trends and domestic tax structures. From affordable regions like Andaman and Nicobar Islands to higher-priced states such as Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the range shows how regional policies shape fuel costs. Understanding how diesel prices are calculated and why they differ helps consumers make informed decisions and manage fuel expenses more effectively in their everyday lives.
