Diabetes is a metabolic disease that happens when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces.  The end result is a rise in blood sugar levels. Diabetes has become one of the leading causes of death worldwide in recent years. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 2019 saw 1.5 million people die due to diabetes.  By 2030, this number is estimated to rise to 643 million, which is quite alarming.

Diabetes strikes with little warning, and the lack of visible symptoms has earned it the sobriquet of ‘silent killer’. Sadly half of all diabetics do not realize they have the disease until it has progressed to the symptomatic stage.
