A bank-issued instrument, the SBLC, promises to pay a beneficiary in case of default by the applicant in a contract. When businesses choose to lease SBLC, they pay a fixed fee to use the instrument for a set period instead of purchasing it outright. It is a very useful strategy, especially for firms that are involved in importing, exporting, infrastructural development, or trade financing.

Contrary to a loan, leasing an SBLC does not give direct cash. Rather, it provides a financial assurance that can be monetized, i.e., turned into liquid form via a lending institution. The leased SBLC is usually valid for a period of one year and one day, and hence it can be used in short-term and medium expansion projects.

The Leasing Process Explained

The process starts when a company contacts an SBLC BG provider to initiate the lease. The provider does due diligence to ascertain the legitimacy and financial background of the applicant. Upon approval, a Collateral Transfer Agreement (CTA) is signed by both parties, describing the face value of the SBLC, the fee, and the term of lease.

Once the agreement is signed, the bank of the provider issues the instrument and sends it to the bank of the lessee by a secure SWIFT message version of the SWIFT MT760. The lessee will then be able to monetize the SBLC to get a loan or credit line, which is normally between 50% and 85% of the total value of the SBLC.
